Belting, from technical foundations to art

BELTING is a specific type of high-intensity vocal production used in musical theatre, pop music, various types of folk music and even in some opera and acting.

Often improperly or summarily called “high chest voice” or “mix”, its common definition, as well as its relationship to vocal health, can be controversial.

More and more artists use belting in their performances every year, especially in countries where its definition was unknown until a few years ago. More and more teachers have started to teach it or mention it in their lessons. However, dealing with belting without an exact knowledge of its mechanics and specific and precise training can be very frustrating and dangerous.

However, Estill Voice Training offers a detailed physiological description of belting and a series of detailed exercises. There are “dos and don’ts” for establishing a healthy, effective and successful belting; This EVT-based training has been effectively preparing Broadway and West End performers and pop singers for over 20 years.

In this workshop we will try to clear up any doubts about belting, explain its physiology, establish a basic practice and learn simple but effective exercises to build a healthy and successful sound.

Those who are completely new to EVT are welcome to attend, as a short general introduction will be given at the beginning of the day.

This specially themed workshop is designed to create connections between the principles and exercises of Estill Voice Training® and other vocal specialties and professions. This customized introductory experience can focus on a specific audience or on an advanced EVT® study for Level 1 and 2 participants or for certification candidates.

A certificate of participation will be issued at the end of the workshop. This certificate is not a requirement for the Estill Voice Training® trainer certification.

The conclusion of the workshop will include open coaching in which 3 people (except for time constraints) will have the opportunity to work on BELTING in singing or acting or on problems encountered in a piece.

Francesco Mecorio is a vocal coach and EMCI – Estill Mentor and Course Instructor among the most active at international level. He has been teaching singing and speaking voice for over 20 years.

He trained in pop/rock, jazz, soul, gospel, opera and musicals by attending courses, lessons, workshops, conferences and seminars on singing, speaking voice, medicine applied to the artistic voice and vocal pedagogy in Italy and abroad (UK, USA, Australia).

Thanks to the Estill path, university studies in phonetics and personal research work, over the years he has specialized in the technical control of the voice, including phonetics and diction. He also worked as a pop and jazz singer until 2013, when he decided to dedicate himself completely to teaching, and in the past as an actor, director and assistant director.

Former researcher and professor at Hongik University in Seoul (South Korea) and Visiting Lecturer at HKAPA – Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, he teaches online and in person in Europe, Asia, Australia, North America and Latin America.

He is the author and co-author of numerous publications.

In 2017 in Seoul he was vocal coach of the American cast of “Dreamgirls”, having the honor of working with various Broadway performers. He has been vocal coach and teacher of several celebrities of the Korean musical and theatrical scene.

The workshop is expected to take place “in person” for the PARTICIPANTS category and “online” for the AUDITORS category.

The workshop will be held on condition that the minimum number of 10 PARTICIPANTS is reached and with the following maximum numbers:

100 AUDITOR students “online”

The Academy may at its discretion decide, in relation to the number of applications received, to admit a greater number of applications to participate.

To assign places, a ranking of the applications received will be drawn up in chronological order. Incomplete or illegible applications may be excluded from the ranking.

Students who request it (and subject to availability) will be able to enjoy lunch and possibly also overnight stay with breakfast, at the villa that hosts the course location. To this end, they must select the relevant option in the application form.

The location (photo at the bottom of the page) is surrounded by the greenery of a beautiful park in which to relax and has rooms with bathrooms. Guests who wish to stay would have a profitable and relaxing full immersion training experience.

Those who want to visit the city center can take advantage of a convenient METRO service 150 meters from the course location as well as numerous BUS lines.

To take advantage of lunch on the day of the workshop there is a discounted price of € 20.00 and the menu includes a choice between two first courses, two second courses, side dishes, fruit and coffee.
